She resigned from a fashion career in 2013 to follow Van Dijk to Scotland. By autumn 2025, she was at a British Vogue party in London.
In January 2026, Vogue Netherlands published an interview with Virgil van Dijk. A journalist asked about his wife. Van Dijk said she was the foundation of everything. Rike Nooitgedagt, who had attended a British Vogue party in London just months before that interview ran, did not sit for the same conversation. She never has.
She has been the subject of hundreds of published profiles across multiple languages. She has given one interview in her life โ to The Sun, in 2019 โ and said three sentences. Most of those profiles repeat the same handful of facts, get at least two of them wrong, and stop precisely where the story gets interesting.

How Rike Nooitgedagt and Van Dijk Actually Met
Both grew up in the Haagse Beemden district of Breda, and most articles about her describe the couple as childhood sweethearts who fell for each other in school. Van Dijk’s own account is more specific.
In a Dutch interview, he said they had been together since “the Groningen days, when he was 20.” Wikipedia records the same timeline: the couple met in 2011, when Van Dijk was playing for FC Groningen. He was 19 turning 20 that summer. They came from the same streets in Breda, but the relationship started in adulthood, not a school corridor.
The Fashion Career She Left Behind
Before Glasgow, before Liverpool, before any of this โ Rike Nooitgedagt was building her own professional life. She worked as a fashion sales manager in the Netherlands, selling brand lines to retail stores across the country. During the Groningen years, she was based in that city, building a client network while Van Dijk worked his way through the Dutch football pyramid.
When Van Dijk signed for Celtic in the summer of 2013, she resigned.
In her only known interview, given to The Sun in 2019, Rike described that decision herself:
“I worked as a sales manager and sold different fashion brands to the stores in Holland. I loved it but had to resign to follow my man everywhere football takes him to. So far, we’ve been settling well and having adventures with our lovely dog.”
Those three sentences are the complete public record of her voice.
In a separate 2018 interview with Dutch Soccer, Van Dijk explained how they approached the question of her career going forward: “We decided that she wouldn’t work. If she really would want to, sure, I would never stop her, but we train at different times, so it could be that I’m away at night while she works in the morning and it would be hard to have a relationship. We like it as it is.”
September 2014: The Birth Induction Story
The detail that tells you the most about this relationship is not the wedding, the trophies, or the Vogue appearances. It is what happened in September 2014.
Rike was approaching her due date. Van Dijk had just received his first-ever call-up to the Netherlands senior squad, under head coach Guus Hiddink โ the moment he had spent his entire career working toward. The training camp dates landed directly on top of the expected birth. Van Dijk asked Rike to have the birth medically induced so he could be present for both.
She said yes.
Their daughter Nila was born without complications. Van Dijk joined the Dutch squad. He did not play a single minute.
Wikipedia confirms he was named in the Netherlands squad three times across 2014 without earning a cap. His international debut did not come until October 10, 2015 โ a 2-1 win over Kazakhstan in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier, under a different manager entirely, Danny Blind. After that match, Van Dijk said: “I’ve waited a long time for this and I’m hungry for more.”
Rike had agreed to have their daughter’s birth medically induced in September 2014. Fourteen months passed before he made his debut.
Marriage and Four Children
Van Dijk and Rike married in the summer of 2017, while he was still at Southampton and before the ยฃ75 million move to Liverpool. The ceremony was private, held at a seaside resort in the Netherlands, attended by close family and friends.
Their four children:
- Nila van Dijk โ born September 2014
- Jadi van Dijk โ born 2016
- Two further children born after 2016, whose names have not been made public
Wikipedia confirms four children in total. The majority of published profiles still list two, having not been updated since 2016.
The family relocated to Merseyside in January 2018. Those early weeks in the city were far from private. As Van Dijk described it: “The first two weeks in Liverpool, we were at this hotel and within a day, the media, paparazzi and the fans were in the hotel lobby.”
What Van Dijk Has Said About Her
Van Dijk does not speak at length about his personal life. When he does, the references to Rike are direct.
In the 2018 Dutch Soccer interview, he described her role in the family:
“Football really is number 2 for me. Family is always number 1. And that will always be that way. My daughters give me so much. And my wife is the centre of the family. She is the playmaker. And I value her tremendously. A footballer’s wife always needs to be strong, positive and happy. I realise this. But we simply can’t stroll through the park, or go out for a glass of wine. We are still young, but we never go out.”
By January 2026, speaking to Vogue Netherlands, he kept it shorter: “She is the foundation of everything.”
Elsewhere he has said: “Whatever happens on the field, win or lose, I come home and then I’m just dad.”
From Groningen to British Vogue
The standard telling of Rike’s story ends in 2013: career left, chapter closed. The longer version does not end there.
By 2019, she and Van Dijk had appeared together in Vogue’s fall editorial. In autumn 2025, the couple attended a British Vogue party in London for the spring/summer 2026 shows. The Vogue Netherlands profile published in January 2026 reported that Rike and Van Dijk had been working with a professional stylist for approximately 18 months as a reflection of their shared interest in fashion. The Scandinavian brand Rains has used Van Dijk as a model.
One detail from the same Vogue interview: the most treasured item in Van Dijk’s wardrobe is a pair of crystal-studded Christian Louboutin sneakers. Rike gave them to him in the early years of their relationship, when she was still a fashion sales manager in Groningen.
She walked away from the industry professionally in 2013. The industry eventually showed up at her door.
Her Public Appearances
Rike Nooitgedagt holds no public social media accounts. She rarely announces her presence at anything. She has, however, been documented at:
- Celtic’s Scottish Premiership title celebrations, 2014 โ photographed by The Sun
- Ballon d’Or ceremony, Paris, December 2019 โ Van Dijk finished runner-up to Messi; she attended
- FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 โ watched from the stands during Netherlands matches
- FIFA Best Awards, February 2023 โ on the red carpet alongside Van Dijk and their two older daughters
- Van Dijk’s mural unveiling in Liverpool
- Liverpool’s Premier League trophy celebrations, April and May 2025
- British Vogue party, London, autumn 2025
The Georgie Lyall Allegation
In 2018, adult actress Georgie Lyall told The Sun she had a sexual encounter with Van Dijk in 2014, during the period Rike was pregnant with Nila. Lyall claimed the encounter followed a Celtic title celebration and that she noticed baby items at Van Dijk’s home. No supporting evidence was produced, Van Dijk made no public statement, and the couple remained together. The story faded quickly and has not returned.
Where Things Stand in 2026
Van Dijk signed a two-year contract extension with Liverpool on April 17, 2025. Six days later, Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions after a 5-1 win over Tottenham โ Van Dijk lifting the trophy as club captain, securing a record-tying 20th English league title for the club. In November 2025, he broke Frank de Boer’s record as the Netherlands’ longest-serving captain.
Through all of it, Rike Nooitgedagt has been where she has always been: present at the milestone, absent from the press room.
Van Dijk’s most treasured item of clothing, as he told Vogue Netherlands in January 2026, is a pair of crystal-studded Christian Louboutin sneakers โ a gift from Rike in the early years of their relationship, back when she was selling fashion in Groningen and he was a centre-back nobody outside the Netherlands had heard of. He kept the shoes. She stayed out of the interviews. That is, more or less, how they have always worked.
