Who Is Lucy Bronze Partner? The Truth About Ona Batlle

Lucy Bronze doesn’t talk about her relationships, though not for lack of talking. In the past year alone, she’s discussed her autism diagnosis on BBC television, let a magazine interview her mother about her childhood, and described in detail what it’s like to be unable to hold a coach’s gaze during a team talk. On one subject only, whether she’s dating her former Barcelona teammate Ona Batlle, she has never said a word. Neither has Batlle.

That silence is about to matter more than it used to. Batlle left Barcelona for Arsenal this summer, and Bronze signed a new contract to stay at Chelsea. They are no longer teammates who happen to be close. They are rivals in the same city, in the same league, for the first time since anyone started paying attention to whether they’re a couple.

Bronze and Batlle’s Three Years at Barcelona

Bronze joined Barcelona in the summer of 2022, the same transfer window as Keira Walsh, her teammate from Manchester City. Photographs from a Los Angeles trip that year kept people speculating about the two of them for most of Bronze’s time in Spain. Walsh would later join Bronze again, at Chelsea, in January 2025.

Batlle returned to Barcelona from Manchester United in 2023, which meant that for roughly a year, Bronze, Walsh, and Batlle were all on the same squad. That August, at the World Cup final in Sydney, Spain beat England, and Batlle was seen comforting Bronze on the pitch afterward. It was the first time the two of them appeared in the same headlines.

Bronze left for Chelsea in the summer of 2024, ending her season alongside Batlle. Neither Walsh nor Batlle has ever been confirmed as anything more than a teammate, current or former.

After Barcelona, It Continued

Bronze and Batlle kept turning up together anyway. They were photographed at Disneyland Paris that December, five months after they had last shared a locker room.

The following spring brought a very different kind of disclosure. In March 2025, during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Bronze sat down with BBC Sport’s Alex Scott and talked through an autism and ADHD diagnosis she had received four years earlier. She described struggling to hold eye contact with coaches during team talks, and said her mother had suspected something since Bronze was a toddler. The choice to go public, she explained, was that it might help someone else who hadn’t yet talked about their own diagnosis. Around the same period, a magazine ran a lengthy interview with her mother about Bronze’s childhood on Holy Island, off the Northumberland coast, and about a Domino’s in Leeds that later renamed itself in her honor.

None of that came from a leaked photo or a question she couldn’t avoid. She offered it. A few months later, ahead of the Euros, she posted a photo of a beach captioned only “a few days of sun.” Batlle replied with a heart eye emoji. That was all either of them said.

Inside the Euro 2025 Final

The moment that drew the most attention came on July 27, 2025, at St. Jakob Park in Basel. Batlle set up Spain’s opening goal in the 25th minute, crossing for Mariona Caldentey to head the ball past England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Alessia Russo equalized for England in the second half, and the score held level through extra time. England won the shootout, converting three penalties to Spain’s one, with Chloe Kelly scoring the decisive kick.

Bronze went off injured during extra time. She revealed afterward that she had played the entire tournament with a fractured tibia.

After the final whistle, retired US international Megan Rapinoe, watching from the stands, filmed Batlle and Bronze together on the pitch and posted the clip to her own account. The next day, the Catalan outlet En Blau reported that the two were a couple who had grown close during their year together at Barcelona. Neither player has confirmed that account. It remains, three years into the speculation, the single most direct claim any outlet has made.

A week later, paparazzi photos placed the two of them on a Mediterranean holiday. By then, they had not been club teammates for more than a year.

Bronze and Batlle, Now Rivals

Batlle’s contract at Barcelona expired at the end of June, and she signed with Arsenal on a free transfer. Days later, Bronze signed a new one year deal to stay at Chelsea through 2027. They now share a city and a league. They do not share a club, and haven’t since 2024.

What happens next isn’t clear, and there’s no real evidence pointing either way. Rival clubs in the same city still cross paths, at England camps, at award nights, in whatever has survived three years of speculation already. It’s just as possible that whatever kept them close depended on the rhythm of playing for the same team, and that rhythm ended two years before this summer did.

Bronze has shown, more than once, that she’ll talk when she decides something about herself is worth saying. On whether Ona Batlle is actually her partner, she still hasn’t decided that. Neither has Batlle.

He moved to London from Stockholm in 2018 and cut his teeth covering business, politics, entertainment, and breaking news across Europe, which gave him a front-row seat to how traditional newsrooms were struggling to adapt. He studied journalism at Uppsala University and later trained at the Reuters Institute, but most of what he knows about running a newsroom came from years of watching what worked and what didn't. He still reports on UK politics, celebrity news, sports, technology, and European affairs when he's not editing, and he's building Daily News Magazine around the idea that speed and accuracy don't have to be enemies.
