Jessie Phoenix Jopling is the 19-year-old daughter of British filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson and White Cube gallery founder Jay Jopling. For most of her life, that was all the public could say about her. No social media, no interviews, no red carpets โ just a name attached to two of Britain’s most significant cultural figures. That changed in October 2024, when her stepfather, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, broke nearly two decades of family silence with a birthday post.

Who Are Jessie Phoenix Jopling’s Parents?
To understand Jessie, you have to understand where she comes from โ because both sides of her family tree carry serious cultural weight.
Jay Jopling: Her Father
Jay Jopling, born in June 1963, is the founder of White Cube, one of the most powerful contemporary art galleries in the world. He is the son of Baron Michael Jopling, a Conservative politician who served as Minister for Agriculture under Margaret Thatcher. Educated at Eton and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied English literature and history of art, Jay moved to London in the mid-1980s and began building connections in the emerging British art scene.
In May 1993, he opened the original White Cube at 44 Duke Street, St James’s, in London’s West End. It was a single room with a bold idea: one-off shows for both British and international artists, no repeat exhibitions in the first decade. From that beginning, White Cube became central to the rise of the Young British Artists movement โ the gallery that put Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Gilbert & George, and Antony Gormley in front of global collectors.
White Cube now operates across six cities:
- London โ Mason’s Yard and Bermondsey
- Hong Kong
- Paris (Avenue Matignon, opened 2020)
- Seoul (opened September 2023)
- New York (Madison Avenue, opened October 2023)
After separating from Sam in 2008, Jay married Hikari Yokoyama, who worked at the art auction platform Paddle8.
Sam Taylor-Johnson: Her Mother
Sam Taylor-Johnson was born on March 4, 1967, in Croydon. She attended Goldsmiths University of London and came up through the same Young British Artists generation as many of her then-husband’s gallery clients โ building a reputation through fine-art photography and video installation before moving into film.
Her directing credits include Nowhere Boy (2009), Fifty Shades of Grey (2015), A Million Little Pieces (2018), and Back to Black (2024), the Amy Winehouse biopic. She is a three-time BAFTA nominee and was appointed OBE in 2011 โ Aaron and her eldest daughters accompanied her to Buckingham Palace for the ceremony.
Sam and Jay married in 1997 and have two daughters: Angelica Mara Jopling, born in April 1997, and Jessie. They separated in September 2008, announcing the split as amicable after 11 years of marriage.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson: Her Stepfather
Sam met Aaron Taylor-Johnson in 2008 when she cast him, then 18, in the lead role of Nowhere Boy. He is 23 years her junior. They got engaged in 2009, announced it at the film’s London premiere, and married on June 21, 2012, at Babington House in Somerset. Both took the hyphenated surname Taylor-Johnson.
Aaron was 18 when Jessie was born in 2006 โ meaning he entered her life when she was roughly two years old and has been her stepfather throughout her entire childhood and adolescence. His career credits include Kick-Ass (2010), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Bullet Train (2022), The Fall Guy (2024), Nosferatu (2024), and 28 Years Later (2025). He won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for Nocturnal Animals in 2016.
Sam and Aaron also have two daughters together: Wylda Rae, born July 2010, and Romy Hero, born January 2012. Jessie is one of four daughters in the household. In 2024, Sam described all four girls to The Hollywood Reporter as “four very strong, opinionated young women.”
A Childhood Kept Deliberately Out of Sight
The Taylor-Johnson household has made privacy a consistent priority since before Jessie could walk. Aaron put it plainly in Harper’s Bazaar in 2019:
“We live behind walls. Literally, figuratively, and deliberately. You’ll never see our children or any of our most personal moments on social media or in the press. We have our professional lives and our life together, and we keep them apart.”
None of Jessie’s three parents shared photographs of her publicly while she was a minor. That held for 17 years.
The family’s home base is a five-bedroom, 16th-century farmhouse on 14 acres near Bruton, Somerset, purchased in 2010. It was previously owned by Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud. They had also owned a $7.5 million home in the Hollywood Hills, which they sold in 2021. After spending the COVID period in Los Angeles, the family relocated permanently back to England. Jessie spent her teenage years on that Somerset farm.
Aaron told Esquire about the daily rhythm of their life: “I enjoy the normality of things, the everyday stuff. Getting my kids ready in the mornings, taking them to school and activities โ that’s plenty. That feeds my soul.”
October 2024: The 18th Birthday That Broke the Silence
On October 8, 2024, Jessie turned 18. For the first time, both Aaron and Sam shared photographs of her publicly.
Aaron posted two Instagram Stories. The first: a childhood throwback of the two of them hugging, captioned “Happy Birthday BabyGirl.” The second: a current photo of them together, captioned “18 now…still my babygirl.”
Sam shared a carousel of photographs spanning Jessie’s childhood. Her caption: “18 โค๏ธ My darling Phoenix โค๏ธ Happy Birthday. You are everything and more. I love you. I am so proud to be your Mummy.” David Furnish and Isla Fisher were among the well-known names who commented.
Within the family, Jessie goes by Phoenix โ not Jessie. Sam’s post, Aaron’s post, and his subsequent red carpet statement all use that name. This is not widely noted in most coverage of her.
December 2024: Her First Red Carpet
On December 10, 2024, Jessie attended the world premiere of Kraven the Hunter at AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York City. She was joined by Sam, Aaron, and her older sister Angelica. It was the first time all four appeared together at a public event. The photograph, credited to Jamie McCarthy/WireImage/Getty Images, remains the most widely circulated image of Jessie to date.
| Attendee | Outfit |
|---|---|
| Jessie Phoenix Jopling | Gunmetal metallic gown, cowl neckline |
| Sam Taylor-Johnson | Sequined burgundy dress |
| Aaron Taylor-Johnson | Burgundy velvet blazer, black shirt, black trousers |
| Angelica Jopling | Black suit, olive green Gucci bag, bolo tie |
On the red carpet, Aaron explained to E! News why his younger daughters Wylda and Romy were not present: “I have four daughters. Due to the rating, I can only let the ones that are old enough to watch it.”
He then added: “I’m blessed. I have four beautiful daughters: Angelica, Phoenix, Wylda, and Romy. I love you all very much.”
In January 2025, Hello Magazine reported that Jessie appeared to be part of the family’s New Year trip to the Maldives, visible in content shared across Sam and Aaron’s social accounts.
Her Older Sister: Angelica Jopling
Jessie’s sister Angelica Mara Jopling, now 28, offers a useful contrast. She holds a BA from Stanford University and an MA in Curating the Museum from the Courtauld University. In April 2023, she opened Incubator, a commercial gallery on Chiltern Street in Marylebone, London. The Art Newspaper and Vogue Italia both covered the launch. Angelica has maintained a public presence for years โ appearing in Nowhere Boy (2009), Kick-Ass 2 (2013), and working openly in the London arts scene.
Jessie has taken a different path.
What Is Actually Known About Jessie Phoenix Jopling
A significant volume of content online about Jessie contains information that has no basis in any credible reporting. Multiple websites describe her as an “internationally acclaimed contemporary artist” with exhibitions and a developing body of work. No legitimate outlet โ not The Art Newspaper, Vogue, People, E! Online, nor any established publication โ has ever reported any of this. Those claims are invented.
What credible reporting confirms as of March 2026:
- Born October 8, 2006, in England โ currently 19 years old
- Her family calls her Phoenix, not Jessie
- No known public social media accounts of any kind
- First confirmed public photographs: October 2024 (18th birthday)
- First confirmed red carpet appearance: December 2024 (Kraven the Hunter premiere)
- Has never given a public interview
Her education, personal interests, and future plans have not been reported by any legitimate news organisation. Anything written about those subjects online is speculation at best.
Where She Stands at 19
Jessie Phoenix Jopling’s surname carries real weight. Her father runs a gallery empire that shaped a generation of contemporary art. Her mother is an OBE-holding filmmaker with 30 years of work behind her. Her stepfather is a Golden Globe winner. Her older sister runs her own gallery in central London.
At 19, Jessie has appeared publicly twice in a formal setting and has said nothing on the record. That is not an accident โ it is the result of a deliberate, consistent choice her entire family has made since before she was old enough to understand what celebrity means.
Whether her public profile grows from here, or whether she continues on her own terms away from it, is a decision that belongs entirely to her. What is clear is that she has grown up with adults who understood the value of that choice and protected it for nearly two decades.
That says more about who she is than any speculative profile could.
