Miami’s Ground Game Controlled Everything

De’Von Achane broke a 39-yard run in the first quarter, scored on a 13-yard carry to make it 14-0, and then left in the second quarter with a rib injury. Miami barely noticed.

Jaylen Wright stepped into the feature role and turned in the best performance of his NFL career. The second-year back from Tennessee carried 24 times for 107 yards, well past his previous career high of 86 yards set during his rookie season against the Patriots. His 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was also his first career NFL score.

“I mean, this is what I expected โ€” I know I can do this,” Wright said. “Just give me a ball. I know what I’m going to do.”

Coach Mike McDaniel said Achane could have returned “in an emergency.” He was not needed. Ollie Gordon II came in late in the fourth quarter and punched in a 7-yard touchdown to push the lead to 31-10.

Tua Tagovailoa Stats and the Miami Passing Game

Tagovailoa was efficient and protected the ball. He went 13-of-21 for 127 yards, one touchdown to Jaylen Waddle, zero interceptions, and a 94.7 passer rating before sitting with the game already decided.

With the temperature at 41 degrees, Tagovailoa also put a persistent narrative to rest. He entered the day 0-7 in career games played at 46 degrees or below, and left it 1-7. More broadly, he improved to 7-0 as a starter directly against New York and 8-0 overall in games involving the Jets.

“I felt good, but it’s football,” Tagovailoa said. “Whether it’s hot, whether it’s cold, you’ve got to go out there and you’ve got to play.”

Waddle hauled in the opening touchdown and led all Miami receivers. Dulcich was reliable underneath, catching all three of his targets for 41 yards.

Jets Quarterback Situation Fell Apart Early

New York never had a settled signal-caller all game. Tyrod Taylor started for the third consecutive week in place of the benched Justin Fields, who was ruled out before kickoff with knee soreness. Taylor lasted less than one quarter โ€” he took a hit while throwing, with the pass going off Mason Taylor’s hands directly to Dolphins linebacker Tyrel Dodson for an interception (originally ruled incomplete, overturned after Mike McDaniel’s challenge). Taylor was diagnosed with a groin injury and did not return.

Brady Cook, an undrafted rookie, made his NFL regular-season debut. He showed some improvement in the fourth quarter but absorbed six sacks, threw two interceptions, and posted a 35.8 passer rating against a defense that controlled pace all afternoon.

“I think you definitely saw flashes there in the fourth quarter of us moving the ball,” Cook said. “We need more of it.”

Rookie tight end Mason Taylor led New York with 51 yards but had two drops on eight targets. The Jets went 0-of-3 in the red zone, scoring a single field goal on three trips inside the Miami 20.

Miami’s Defense Took the Game Away

The Dolphins sacked Jets quarterbacks six times for 27 yards in losses, intercepted three passes, and held New York to a 1-of-12 conversion rate on third down.

Zach Sieler led the pass rush with 2.5 sacks. Rasul Douglas picked off a Cook pass in the end zone late in the second quarter and finished with five pass breakups on seven targets thrown into his coverage. Ethan Bonner came up with a red zone interception on New York’s final drive to close out any remaining possibility.

Special Teams: Williams Gave the Jets a Moment

Down 21-0 with 20 seconds left in the first quarter, Isaiah Williams returned a Jake Bailey punt 78 yards for a touchdown โ€” his second punt return score of the 2025 season โ€” to briefly make it 21-7. The Jets’ offense could not sustain anything from there. New York settled for a field goal in the fourth quarter and never got closer.

What This Game Meant

First-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn did not look for excuses after the final whistle.

“This game was definitely disappointing,” Glenn said. “Really hard to try to put this in words. The only thing I can say is I didn’t have these guys ready to play. That was obvious by the way we went out there and played.”

The loss sealed New York’s fate โ€” officially out of the playoff picture with a 3-10 record, extending a drought that now sits at 15 consecutive seasons without a postseason appearance. No other active franchise in professional football has gone longer.

Miami moved to 6-7, having won five of their last six games after opening the year at 1-6. The December run kept the Dolphins very much alive in the AFC wild card race.

“That’s a formula to win games in December,” McDaniel said.

For a team that looked finished in October, the Week 14 box score against New York โ€” 239 rushing yards, zero turnovers, four red zone touchdowns in four attempts, six sacks โ€” was as complete a performance as Miami had managed all season.
