Lisa Riley Husband: Who Is Al and Why They’ve Never Married

Lisa Riley has been with her fiancé for over a decade. She has never told the world his surname. He has spoken to the press exactly once. Here is everything that is actually confirmed.

At the bank, Al calls Lisa his wife. Lisa calls him her husband. On paper, they are not married and have no date set. That is the central oddity of one of British television’s most private celebrity relationships, and it has been that way since 2014.

Lisa Riley, the actress behind Mandy Dingle on ITV’s Emmerdale for nearly thirty years, has built a long career on being completely open with the public. Her weight loss journey, her sobriety, her IVF attempts, her grief after losing her mother — all of it has been discussed in interviews, on television, in her own autobiography. But the man she has called her soulmate for over a decade? His surname remains unknown. That has never changed.

Is Lisa Riley Married?

No. Lisa Riley is not married.

She is engaged to a man she refers to publicly only as Al. The couple have been together since 2014. Al proposed in May 2018. As of March 2026, there is no wedding date, no confirmed ceremony, and no public announcement of any change to that situation.

She has described herself in various interviews as “already married, but not married,” and both she and Al refer to each other informally using the terms husband and wife. Legally, they remain engaged.

Who Is Lisa Riley’s Fiancé, Al?

Al is a musician. That is the only professional detail Lisa has ever confirmed about him.

She has never disclosed his surname publicly, has kept him largely off her social media, and has been deliberate about protecting his privacy throughout their relationship. The couple live together in Yorkshire.

Speaking on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast, Lisa gave the clearest description of how he fits into her life:

“I’m, you know, a Catherine wheel, and that’s what works and that’s what I needed. He’s brilliantly sarcastic, we appreciate each other. He’s a musician, we’re not in nine-to-five jobs, so we’re not always joined at the hip. And it’s that understanding.”

She has also described what that day-to-day understanding looks like in practice, telling Hello! magazine:

“It’s those moments when I’m sitting in the back bedroom with the radio on all by myself, and he just knows I need that space. He doesn’t over-pander to me.”

How Lisa Riley Met Al

They met in 2014, through mutual friends, in and around the Strictly Come Dancing live tour. Lisa had just reached the semi-finals of Strictly Series 10 alongside the late Robin Windsor. She was 37, not looking for a relationship, and still in grief after losing her mother, Cath, to cancer in 2012.

The detail she keeps coming back to whenever she discusses their first meeting: Al had no idea who she was.

“He didn’t know who I was, that was one of the appeals,” she told campmate Aitch during I’m A Celebrity 2025.

She told The Mirror she had been the “hunter” in every previous relationship, always looking, always chasing. With Al, none of that applied. As she put it: “He didn’t give a crap if I was a lollypop lady or working on the bins.”

The couple’s first public photograph together did not appear until 2019, five years into the relationship.

The Engagement

Al proposed in May 2018, after four years together. Lisa announced the news on Instagram that Monday morning:

“Yes I can now confirm the rumours are true… I have got engaged… my soul mate and best mate and love of my life. Al is the best thing to have ever happened to me. We have absolutely NO date set for ANY wedding day, just happy together… zero fuss, just firmed our togetherness.”

The ring was a band with a square-cut diamond. She later admitted she had been wearing it privately for some time before going public, having grown tired of switching it between fingers to hide it.

Why They Have Never Married

This is the question Lisa has answered more than any other about her personal life, and her answer has stayed consistent for years.

Lisa’s mother, Cath, died of cancer in 2012. Al has also lost his mother. The idea of a wedding without either of their mums present is something Lisa has said, repeatedly and clearly, she cannot face.

Speaking to The Mirror in March 2025:

“We’re already married, but not married. And honestly, I truly couldn’t cope with the big day without my mum by my side. Al lost his mum not long ago, and he’s got no parents. Thank God I’ve got Dad. But you know, we’re not kids. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. We’re 11 years together in June.”

She has made the same point going back to 2012: “We’ve lost both our mums. And when it comes to things like weddings, you do it for the other people.”

What makes this more than a recurring quote is the consistency across thirteen years of interviews. This is not a media line. It is a position she has held, and returned to, every time the subject has come up.

The I’m A Celebrity 2025 U-Turn

Before entering the I’m A Celebrity jungle in November 2025, Lisa told OK! Magazine she had changed her mind. With one condition.

“My Al will be there at the end of the bridge waiting for me. We have been talking about getting married. It’s really weird. If I get to the final, then yes. It would make sense this year that I would come back with that and a wedding ring.”

She finished fifth. She did not reach the final.

As of March 2026, no wedding has been announced.

The Only Time Al Has Ever Spoken to the Press

During Lisa’s time in the I’m A Celebrity 2025 jungle, Al gave The Mirror what remains his only known interview with any media outlet.

It came after Lisa told the Bush Telegraph she found host Ant McPartlin “very juicy,” describing herself as a “red-blooded 49-year-old woman.” The comment made headlines. Al was completely unbothered.

He told The Mirror:

“There is no business like showbusiness, right? It’s all good. I have no fears of her letting me go.”

He said he was very proud of her, and that he was looking forward to meeting her on the jungle bridge at her exit, “hopefully not the first one out. Hopefully at the end.”

His last words to her before she walked into the jungle were four words: “Just be you.”

IVF and the Children Question

Lisa and Al attempted IVF in 2018, around the same time as the engagement. After seven months, Lisa made the decision to stop.

She spoke about it publicly in an interview with The Mirror:

“My body was being pumped full of hormones to get my egg readings, and in the end they weren’t good enough. It messes with your head and I just couldn’t do that to myself any more.”

What she has carried from that period is Al’s reaction during it. As she described: “He loved me enough to go, ‘whatever they’re pumping you with, they’re taking Lisa away from me.'”

She has since spoken about the decision with no apparent regret:

“Finding out that I was unlikely to get pregnant was a blow. But I refuse to be defined by that. People think women need to have a child to complete themselves, but that just isn’t the case.”

She has described herself as a devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews, and has said she feels complete in the life she and Al have built together.

Before Al: A Rocky Road

Lisa documented her relationships before Al in her 2013 autobiography, Never Judge a Book By Its Cover. The picture she painted was of someone who consistently chose badly, partly because she was always the one doing the choosing.

Three relationships stood out:

  • A gay flatmate she fell in love with before he came out, staying in the situation out of fear he would leave
  • A conman boyfriend who claimed to be a waiter and was later sentenced to three and a half years for fraud
  • A married set painter she met during panto in 2002, who was ten years her senior and later left his wife for her

She has said plainly that Al broke every pattern from that history. She was not looking. He did not know who she was. Nobody was performing for anybody.

March 2026: Where Things Stand

Lisa Riley does not have a husband. She has a fiancé named Al, a musician she has spent twelve years building a life with in Yorkshire, whom she has shielded from press attention since the day they met.

He proposed in a car park in May 2018. She announced it wearing the ring on the wrong finger. He has spoken publicly once. She reached the I’m A Celebrity jungle in 2025 and came fifth, which, by her own stated condition, meant the wedding conversation goes back on hold.

What the record does show is this: the man told her “just be you” before she walked into one of the most watched television programmes in the country.

For Lisa Riley, after everything that came before Al, that is not a small thing.

He moved to London from Stockholm in 2018 and cut his teeth covering business, politics, entertainment, and breaking news across Europe, which gave him a front-row seat to how traditional newsrooms were struggling to adapt. He studied journalism at Uppsala University and later trained at the Reuters Institute, but most of what he knows about running a newsroom came from years of watching what worked and what didn't. He still reports on UK politics, celebrity news, sports, technology, and European affairs when he's not editing, and he's building Daily News Magazine around the idea that speed and accuracy don't have to be enemies.
