Kailyn Lowry Twins: The NICU Experience That Kept Her Babies Apart For Weeks

Kailyn Lowry One baby was enough when Kailyn Lowry became a mother for the first time at the end of November 2023. The other remained behind, hooked up to monitors and feeding tubes. A mother of six boys who had already experienced five healthy pregnancies, nothing prepared her for the sight of seeing the neonatal intensive care unit doors close with her daughter still inside.

The former “Teen Mom 2” star gave birth to fraternal twins Nov. 3, 2023 — nearly five weeks ahead of her due date. Son Verse and daughter Valley were born prematurely via an emergency C-section at 35 weeks, and both had to be immediately admitted into the NICU. Whereas Verse bounced back in days, Valley spent weeks in neonatal care and couldn’t even eat without a doctor’s aid.

When One Twin Arrives First

Valley wouldn’t wake, and couldn’t eat enough. Lowry visited every day but was unable to bottle-feed her daughter, due to the tube in her nose that medical staff used to nourish her. Every attempt concluded with the same result.

“I have never seen a baby in the world that did not wake up to eat or show hunger signs,” Lowry said on her “Barely Famous” podcast in January 2024. “She’d snooze right through feedings. She never had any hunger signs.”

The discharge happened in stages. Verse went home while Valley stayed in the hospital with feeding issues that prevented doctors from setting a solid discharge date. Milestones dictated everything. Lowry divided her time between a newborn at home and the side of an incubator, watching numbers on screens.

“There was still just so much going on and I still don’t even know if I think I’ve processed it,” she told podcast listeners weeks after both twins finally came home. “I am still incredibly concerned about so many things.

The Delivery Nobody Expected

Lowry’s tears fell before entering surgery. The C-section terrified her, after five vaginal deliveries with her other babies. Doctors had no options when one of the twins turned out to be breech. At 31, she had never been through major surgery.

The process went smoothly, but both babies required more than standard newborn care. A 35-week preemie typically presents respiratory or feeding complications. The primary barrier Valley had to remaining in the hospital while her brother went home was eating.

Lowry had kept the birth private for weeks. She revealed the twins on her podcast January 19, 2024 at six weeks old. The names came later.

Verse and Valley

Lincoln picked his brother’s name. The 10-year-old basketball buff recommended commemorating NBA star Allen Iverson. Lowry shortened it to Verse.

Valley is a reference to Lehigh Valley, Pa., where Lowry lived when he was young. “The Lehigh Valley really made a big part of who I am,” she said in a TikTok video from February 2024, when she declared both names. “It’s such a big part of why I’m sitting here today.”

The daughter also represented something else. Lowry was the mother of six sons, by three different partners; she finally had a girl.

Seven Kids, Four Fathers

The twins had entered a full house. Lowry is also the mom of Elliott, 15, whom she had with ex Jo Rivera; Lincoln, 11, who she shares with ex-husband Javi Marroquin; Lux, 7 and Creed, 4 (whose father is her ex Chris Lopez) and Rio, 3 (with Elijah Scott — the twins’ dad).

And she tied her tubes at the C-section. “I know for sure my journey for having children is over,” Lowry said on her podcast in May 24, though she added that she may consider adopting or fostering in the future.

She broke up with Scott in around mid-2025, at just over a year after he proposed. The split required coordinating custody for three children, all under age 3. Now they are neighbors, fostering shared parenting.

The Twins at Two

Valley and Verse celebrated its first birthday on Oct. 29, 2024, with a Halloween party complete with ghost decorations and smash cakes. Lowry shared videos of each child frosted from head to toe, Verse in green pajamas and Valley in pink.

The twins are now two years old by January 2026. Valley eats, drinks and is off feeding tubes. Lowry’s separation anxiety has been replaced by normal toddler mayhem. She regularly posts pictures on social media to document life bringing up seven children and navigating a number of co-parenting relationships.

The NICU stay left its mark. Lowry still thinks back to those weeks when one crib was unoccupied at home and a second held her daughter in a hospital miles away. There are experiences that alter what you think about everything that follows. Having both babies home meant that, for her, the family could now truly begin together.

Lowry remains hosting her podcast and parenting children away from the MTV spotlight that she left in 2019. The twins, who had been divided by medical necessity, will now grow up among six brothers in a household that tumbles with organized chaos and shared custody schedules.

He moved to London from Stockholm in 2018 and cut his teeth covering business, politics, entertainment, and breaking news across Europe, which gave him a front-row seat to how traditional newsrooms were struggling to adapt. He studied journalism at Uppsala University and later trained at the Reuters Institute, but most of what he knows about running a newsroom came from years of watching what worked and what didn't. He still reports on UK politics, celebrity news, sports, technology, and European affairs when he's not editing, and he's building Daily News Magazine around the idea that speed and accuracy don't have to be enemies.
