Road salt doesn’t dissolve your paint directly. What it does is turn ordinary road spray into a conductive salt solution that seeps into every existing chip, scratch and stone strike, then accelerates corrosion of the metal underneath by a factor of five or more compared with plain rainwater. Intact paint survives a winter of gritted roads perfectly well. Damaged paint does not.
That distinction is the whole story, and most people get it backwards. They assume salt attacks the surface and worry about washing frequency while ignoring the three chips on the bonnet that are the actual point of entry. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it against bare metal even on a dry, cold day, so a chipped panel stays wet long after the road has dried.
How Salt Actually Reaches the Metal Under Your Paint
Modern factory paint is a layered system: an electrocoat primer bonded to galvanised steel, a colour basecoat, and a clear coat on top that does most of the protective work. That stack is around 100 to 150 microns thick in total, which is roughly the thickness of a sheet of paper. It’s tougher than it sounds, but it’s not thick.
A stone thrown up at 60mph carries enough energy to punch straight through all three layers. Once that happens, you have a tiny well with exposed steel at the bottom and salt-laden water sitting in it. Sodium chloride dissolved in water forms an electrolyte, which lets the electrochemical reaction we call rust run far faster than it would in fresh water. Research into vehicle corrosion has repeatedly linked salted winter roads to significantly higher rates of perforation and paint blistering than equivalent mileage in unsalted regions.
The damage then spreads sideways rather than downwards. Corrosion products occupy more volume than the steel they came from, so the rust physically lifts the surrounding paint from beneath, creating those brown-edged blisters you see on older wheel arches. By the time a blister is visible, the affected area under the paint is usually two or three times bigger than what you can see.
Why Winter Grit Causes More Chips Than Summer Roads
What gets spread on UK roads is rock salt rather than grit in the literal sense, and National Highways is explicit that it uses salt no larger than 6mm that breaks down into smaller grains as traffic runs over it. Coarse angular granules are what you get for the first hours after a run, though, and that’s exactly when they’re most aggressive to paintwork. National Highways and local authorities spread from roughly late October through to March, with the heaviest use in January and February.
So winter creates a compounding problem. More debris on the road surface means more chips, and every chip created in January immediately fills with the salt that caused it. Salt also loses effectiveness below about minus 6°C to minus 10°C, which is why councils spread more of it in genuinely cold snaps, and why the coldest weeks are also the worst weeks for your paint.
There’s a regional dimension that matters more than people expect. A car in Aberdeenshire or the Pennines will see gritting on most winter days. The same car in Cornwall or coastal Sussex may see comparatively little rock salt but plenty of airborne sea salt, which does the same electrochemical job year round rather than seasonally. Anyone parking within a mile or so of the coast is effectively running a permanent winter as far as their paint is concerned.
What It Costs to Fix Salt Damage Versus Prevent It
The economics here are lopsided in a way that’s genuinely worth thinking about. Sealing a handful of chips with correctly matched paint costs somewhere between £20 and £40 in materials and an afternoon of your time. Once corrosion has taken hold, a bodyshop needs to sand back to clean metal, treat the area, prime, paint and blend, which lands between £250 and £600 per panel depending on where you are. London and the South East sit at the top of that range, with the Midlands and North often 20 to 30 percent cheaper.
Wheel arches and sills are worse again, because the damage tends to be extensive by the time it surfaces and the panels are awkward to work on. Repairs there commonly start around £400 and climb quickly if the arch lip needs cutting and welding. On an older car, that single job can approach a meaningful fraction of the vehicle’s total value.
The practical prevention window is late autumn. Going round the car in good daylight before the first frost, finding every chip and sealing it with a colour-matched stone chip repair kit removes the entry points before the salt arrives. Matching to your vehicle’s factory paint code matters here, because a close-but-wrong shade is more visible than the chip was and can’t be undone easily.
How Different Vehicles and Owners Fare Through a Salted Winter
Not every car suffers equally, and the variation is instructive. Vehicles with substantial aluminium bodywork, which includes several current Land Rover, Jaguar and Audi models, don’t rust in the traditional sense, but they can develop white powdery oxidation and are vulnerable to galvanic corrosion wherever aluminium meets steel fixings. Older cars built before galvanised bodyshells became standard are the most exposed group of all.
Driving pattern matters as much as the vehicle. Someone doing 25,000 motorway miles a year collects chips at a rate that a low-mileage town car never will, because the damage comes from debris flicked up at speed by the wheels ahead. Following distance is a genuine variable here. Sitting two seconds back instead of one meaningfully reduces both the frequency and the force of impacts.
Then there’s the storage question. A garaged car that comes home wet and salted and sits in a still, slightly warmer space can actually corrode faster than one left outside where rain periodically rinses it. Rinsing the underside and arches every couple of weeks through the gritting season, ideally with a hose rather than a pressure washer aimed directly at seams, does more for longevity than any amount of polishing the panels you can see.
The Thing Most Owners Notice Too Late
Salt damage isn’t dramatic. There’s no moment where the paint visibly fails, which is exactly why it gets ignored for two or three winters until a blister appears on a wing and the repair estimate arrives. The people who avoid it are simply the ones who treat late October as a paint checkpoint rather than a car wash.
If you’re planning to keep the car past its fifth or sixth winter, or sell it within the next couple of years, the chips you can see right now are the ones that decide how that goes. Spend twenty minutes with a torch on the bonnet, front bumper, wing mirrors and the leading edge of the roof before the gritters start. Whatever you find there in November is what the salt will be working on until March.
