Who Is Debby Clarke Belichick? Bill Belichick’s Ex-Wife Now

Bill Belichick’s first wife stepped away from public life after their 2006 divorce and opened a tile business near Boston. In the twenty years since, she has said almost nothing, and the record about her has filled with errors. Here is what holds up.

Debby Clarke Belichick is the first wife of Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach now leading the University of North Carolina, and the mother of his three children. They married in 1977 and divorced in 2006. In the twenty years since, she has stayed almost completely out of public view, running a tile and stone showroom outside Boston and never once discussing the marriage in public.

One of the last clear looks anyone got at her came on Nantucket in 2016. Debby stood for a photograph beside the man she had divorced ten years earlier, joined by their son Stephen and his fiancรฉe, to accept a local preservation award for restoring a historic cottage the couple had once bought together. The Boston Herald ran the picture. For someone who had spent decades avoiding cameras, the appearance was rare.

Who is Debby Clarke Belichick?

Debby and Bill met young, in the Annapolis, Maryland area where he grew up, and married in 1977, early in the coaching career that would move the family through stops with the Giants, the Browns, and the Patriots. Their daughter, Amanda, was born in 1984, followed by sons Stephen and Brian.

For most of the marriage, Debby ran the household while her husband worked the long hours his job demanded. Amanda has said she spent much of her childhood in Cleveland, where her father coached the Browns, before the family settled in New England. After Bill took over the Patriots in 2000 and turned them into one of the most successful teams in NFL history, his wife stayed almost entirely out of view. She kept clear of the spotlight that comes with a championship team and never gave the kind of interview that turns a coach’s wife into a public figure.

The divorce, and the Shenocca case

The couple separated in 2004. Reports of trouble in the marriage surfaced in early 2005, and the divorce was finalized in 2006.

The following year, Bill’s name appeared in an unrelated divorce case in New Jersey. It involved Sharon Shenocca, a former New York Giants receptionist he had known since his years as the team’s defensive coordinator in the 1980s. The New York Post reported court allegations that Belichick had bought Shenocca a Brooklyn townhouse and given her money. Shenocca denied any romantic relationship and described him as a friend of her family. Through all of it, Debby said nothing, and she has kept that silence since.

Art of Tile & Stone, her life after football

In 2008, Debby went into business with Paige Yates, a local developer. The two founded Art of Tile & Stone and opened its showroom on Washington Street in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in February 2009. The Boston Herald covered the opening under the headline:

Mrs. Belichick moves on.

The shop sells imported tile and natural stone for kitchens, baths, and home renovations, a boutique showroom where customers work directly with the owners. More than fifteen years later it is still open, with regular hours and steady reviews on home-design platforms. It is the clearest thing Debby built on her own, and the one part of her public life she has kept going.

The family ties that never broke

The common version of her story has Debby leaving the Belichick world after the divorce and starting over with no connection to it. But the record does not bear that out.

She and Bill had bought a property on Nantucket together while they were still married, reported to be worth around $4.6 million, and the family held onto it. That is the cottage behind the 2016 award photo, taken a full decade after the marriage ended, with Debby standing next to her ex-husband and their son. She appeared at other family moments too. In 2011 she took part in a Charles River regatta benefiting AccesSportAmerica, a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities play sports, and she publicly backed a fundraiser tied to the Bill Belichick Foundation. For years after the divorce, the two remained on good enough terms to show up together in public.

Is Debby Clarke Belichick still alive?

Yes. Debby is alive. No death certificate, funeral notice, or credible report says otherwise, and the pages framed as her obituary are false.

A few other details that circulate widely are also wrong:

  • Several sites say she was born in Nashville, Tennessee. That detail belongs to Bill. He was born in Nashville and raised in Annapolis, Maryland, where the two met as teenagers.
  • Many sites say she studied art and sociology at Wesleyan University and met Bill on campus. The Wesleyan connection belongs to their daughter, Amanda, who graduated from the school in 2007. No reliable source places Debby there.

Two other common questions have thinner answers. No reliable figure for her net worth has ever been published, so the amounts attached to her name are guesses. Her birth year is usually given as 1955, which would put her in her early seventies, though even that is not firmly documented.

The Belichick children

All three of the Belichick children went into coaching, and unlike much of what gets written about their mother, their careers are a matter of public record:

  • Amanda earned a history degree from Wesleyan in 2007 and captained its lacrosse team. She has been head women’s lacrosse coach at the College of the Holy Cross since July 2015, was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2024, and is signed through the 2027 season.
  • Stephen, born in 1987, played lacrosse at Rutgers and spent twelve seasons on his father’s Patriots staff, winning three Super Bowls. He is now the defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina.
  • Brian played football and lacrosse at Trinity College and spent nine years with the Patriots before joining his father and brother at North Carolina, where he coaches the defensive backs.

When Bill took the North Carolina job at the end of 2024, Stephen and Brian followed him to Chapel Hill, putting three Belichicks on the same college staff for the 2025 season.

Where Debby Belichick is today

Bill Belichick is 74 now, coaching in North Carolina with two of his sons on his staff and far more visible in his private life than he ever was during the Patriots years. Debby stayed in Wellesley, where the showroom still keeps regular hours. She has let twenty years of rumors go by without correcting a single one, and the plain account of her life has held up better than any of them.

He moved to London from Stockholm in 2018 and cut his teeth covering business, politics, entertainment, and breaking news across Europe, which gave him a front-row seat to how traditional newsrooms were struggling to adapt. He studied journalism at Uppsala University and later trained at the Reuters Institute, but most of what he knows about running a newsroom came from years of watching what worked and what didn't. He still reports on UK politics, celebrity news, sports, technology, and European affairs when he's not editing, and he's building Daily News Magazine around the idea that speed and accuracy don't have to be enemies.
